Gun control is a very strange issue, and I'll tell you why:
Anti-Gun Control: 2nd Amendment right, we should have them. Protect your home.
Gun Control: No guns, no gun violence. End of story.

The issue is that you can certainly do a lot of damage with non-gun weapons, as I'm sure you know. People like to bring up the instance in Michael Moore's "documentary" where a kindergartener brought a gun to school and killed a classmate. Tragedy, yes, but the fault of guns? No. In Japan, a kindergartener brought a knife to school and killed a classmate.

The issue I think that needs to be addressed is America's violent tendencies. Unlike in many places in the world, our very poor and moderately wealthy to very wealthy are located in the same place. It's known that being poor tends to cause more violent tendencies for whatever reason, and being able to lash out on someone and be rewarded in a way (robbery) could be a factor. But we are not the only country that has the poor and wealthy living together, so that wouldn't be the answer. It could be anything from bad parenting, violence in the media, or improper diet. That last one may sound a little out there, but studies show prison violence goes down up to 40% when prisoners are fed a better diet, namely one rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. We are the most unhealthy 1st world country on the planet, and we are also the most violent 1st world country on the planet. I certainly think this deserves looking into.

People can die from knives, chemicals, vehicular homicide, curb stompings, beating, bashing in someone's skull, shoving someone off a building, or any number of ways. These ways will still be readily available if our nation went gun-free, and so I think that our violent tendencies, not our guns, should be under scrutiny.

In addition, destroying the 2nd Amendment plays right into what the government wants to irradicate: the right to militias. The entire purpose of a militia is to destroy the government if it becomes too corrupt. How ironic it is that many people who hate our government are also in favor of removing our 2nd Amendment! People look down upon militias and their members, saying they're nothing but a bunch of crazy gun nuts. A Trekkie may be looked at by some as a crazy fanatic, but that doesn't make him dangerous. Some say that because militias have the ability to be violent, they should be banned...but if we're concerned about something's violent potential, we'd get rid of cars. "Cars have a purpose," they say. And so do guns in the hands of a militia member: take out the government if it gets too corrupt. If you get into an argument with someone about militias, ask them about the last time a militia did something. I know the SWAT took out a bunch of people simply because they were gathered in one place (Waco), and a guy out in the woods had a shoot out because the government was trespassing on his property to take the man into custody for having weapons. Having weapons, including unregistered weapons, is not a crime. In my home state, there is no method to register your weapons at all. All weapons in WA state are unregistered weapons, and yet the press likes to include the fact that someone is in possession of an unregistered weapon as if it were a crime. It's all mind games. All of it.
